The Ghana private road transport Union (GPRTU) has increased transportation fares by 15% effective from Wednesday 26th February 2022.
Due to Frequent fuel prices, spare part and import duty increments, the Ghana Private road transport Union (GPRTU) engaged the government in a meeting with a proposal to increase transport fares.
According to the public relations officer for the Union Mr. Imoro Abbas in an interview with Joynews Ayisha Ibrahim on Thursday monitored by distinguished.com, he said the Union initially wanted an increment rate of 30% but the government disagreed and approved a 10% increment for them. In what he described as “Fortunate” for them fuel prices was increased again paving way for them to ask for more.
“We asked for 30 per cent increment, finally we were down to 20 per cent but the government struck as to 10 per cent of which we asked for more.
“Fortunately for us there has been another upward adjustment of prices at the fuel pumps…”
He also said they didn’t want to increase the fares but rather pleaded to the government to reduce the taxes , but it seems the government was not prepared to do that.
“We have no choice because we initially ask the government to scrap some of the taxes but they were not prepaid to do that. So we have no option than to come out with an upward adjustment to lorry fares”.
The last time transport fares were increased was at June 2021 which was at 13%, Then fuel price per liter was almost 6 cedis. Now fuel price per liter is almost 8 cedis
Below are the 15% adjustment on lorry fares
