UTAG AND GOVERNMENT LANDS ON A PEACEFUL CROSSROAD.

After a meeting between the leadership of UTAG and Government on Friday March 4, the fair wages and salary commission (FWSC) indicated that the meeting saw a successful end.

According to a press release issued by the fair wages and Salary Commission (FWSC) immediately after the meeting, it stated the negotiations ended successfully with both parties meeting their demands especially on the part of UTAG

“Fair wages and salaries commission is pleased to announce a successful conclusion of the negotiations between government and the leadership of the university teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG).

They added in the release that, government wishes to thank everyone, organizations or individuals who helped in bringing the matter to a successful end

“Government wishes to thank all stakeholders who have supported efforts to bring finality and sanity to the matter, including the ministry of Employment and labor relations (MELR), the ministry of finance(MOF), the ministry of education(MOE), National Labour commission(NLC), The Ghana tertiary education Commissions(GTEC), and the vice chancellors Ghana(VCG).

“Government also acknowledges and appreciate the patience and tolerance of parents and students”. That ended the press release.

UTAG’s industrial strike action dates back to Monday January 10, 2022 at the start of a fresh academic year where new students were been admitted into various public tertiary institutions, halting academic work and leaving both fresh and continuing students in a dilemma on when lecturers will come back to the class room for lectures to begin.

Despite several attempts by the government and many organizations as well as Eminent personalities to get UTAG go back to the class during the period ended in vain as they insisted of seeking for themselves good conditions of service. However they agreed to temporary suspend the strike and gave the government two weeks to meet their demands else they go back to strike.

Though the National Executive committee(NEC) of UTAG’s decision were rejected by majority of its members. Their reason behind the rejection was to seek for what they term as better conditions for themselves and that’s exactly the release emphasizes on.

UTAG is yet to release a statement concerning the updates of their strike action after the meeting and even after the press release by Fair wages and Salaries commission (FWSC). But as it stands both students and parents are waiting to hear positive response from UTAG concerning what FWSC described as a successful conclusion.
